Kindergarten at St. Alphonsus Parish School is a balanced program offering children a daily chance to grow and learn through play experiences and teacher initiated activities. The teacher serves as a guide while providing a safe, loving, respectful environment.
Classes run the full school day and prepare students for 1st grade by helping them form a solid, developmentally appropriate foundation in the areas of reading, writing, math, and language skills. We work to build a feeling of accomplishment, pride in quality work, and positive self-esteem.
Like all St. Alphonsus students, kindergarteners gain spiritual enrichment through daily prayers, simple religion lessons, weekly Mass, and age-appropriate community service.
Enrichment Programs are an integral part of the curriculum at St. Alphonsus: physical education, computer technology, art, and music.
A daily snack is served each morning. A hot lunch is available; prepared on-site and served daily at noon.
After lunch recess, the children return to the classroom for a half hour of quiet time. Kindergarten is a very busy place; this is an opportunity to practice being still and rest.
Throughout the year time is spent learning what appropriate behavior looks, sounds, and feels like. Children learn how to correctly use materials and equipment in the classroom and the school. They learn how to work with others. They learn how to identify problems, solve problems, and how to ask for help. Consistent discipline in a structured setting is a big part of the kindergarteners’ adjustment to school life.
The Kindergarten program is organized for a maximum of 24 students under the leadership of an Early Childhood certified teacher with assistance from a teacher’s aide.
